Stinging Insect Control With Pollinator Protection in Mind

Honey bees are fuzzy, docile pollinators — if a swarm settles on your property, the right call is usually a local beekeeper, not treatment. Bumble bees are gentle giants that rarely sting unprovoked. Paper wasps build open, umbrella-shaped combs under eaves and railings. Yellow jackets nest in the ground and wall voids and defend aggressively, especially in late summer. Hornets build large enclosed paper nests in trees and on structures. Carpenter bees bore perfectly round holes into deck rails and fascia boards — more a wood problem than a sting problem.

■When a Nest Needs a Professional

Distance and traffic decide it. A paper wasp comb high on a shed you never touch can often be left alone until frost. A yellow jacket nest beside a doorway, deck, playset, or mower path is a different story — every pass provokes it, and late-season colonies number in the thousands. If anyone in the household has a sting allergy, the threshold drops to zero.

Whatever you do, don't disturb an active nest yourself — knocking one down or spraying it partially is how most multiple-sting incidents happen. Aggravated colonies defend in numbers, and ground nests are almost impossible to treat safely without protective equipment.

■How Pollinator-Conscious Treatment Works

Responsible stinging-insect work is targeted, not broadcast. That means:

• Treating the nest itself, not blanketing the yard
• Avoiding flowering plants in bloom whenever possible — that's where pollinators are working
• Timing applications for when foraging activity is low
• Identifying first: honey bee colonies get referred to rescue and relocation, not treated
• Choosing removal over repeated spraying wherever access allows

Targeted nest removal solves the actual problem — the defended colony in the wrong place — without collateral damage to the bees your garden depends on. Pollinator protection isn't a marketing line; it's part of responsible service planning, and it's why "just spray everything" is never our answer.
